Both Sides Now:

The Music of Joni Mitchell

Rolling Stone called her “one of the greatest songwriters ever”, and All Music has stated, “When the dust settles, Joni Mitchell may stand as the most important and influential female recording artist of the late 20th century”. Apparently, NPR agrees, because, in their recent compilation of the 150 greatest albums made by women from 1964 to the present, her album Blue was voted number 1!

Just days before this announcement, “Both Sides Now” launched a successful, standing-room-only concert in Gainesville that’s still the talk of the town.

The band is dedicated to bringing Joni’s innovative and emotionally resonant music to a live audience. Ranging from solo piano and dulcimer songs to the whole 9-piece ensemble, this multi-generational group of iconic Gainesville musicians performs songs from Mitchell’s first decade of recordings, including Song to a Seagull, Clouds, Ladies of the Canyon, Blue, For the Roses, Court and Spark, and Hejira.

It takes four “Joni’s” to cover this broad range of Joni’s singing, and they are Cathy DeWitt, Samara Crutchfield, Janet Rucker, and Maggie Rucker. Their stunning harmonies are a joy to hear, and they skillfully evoke the original recordings. The supporting band includes David Beede on dulcimer, Richard Bassil on bass, Brad Bangstad on keyboards, Michael Derry on guitar, and Rob Rothschild on drums. DeWitt and Janet Rucker also perform double duty on acoustic piano and guitars. The guitar work is especially challenging as Janet plays in five different tunings – Joni’s trademark.

“The best show I’ve ever seen in Gainesville!”

The concert was presented as part of the Jewel Box Concerts at the Thomas Center, co-sponsored by the City of Gainesville Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs, and the Shake Rag Cultural Center.

The Joni’s and the Both Sides Now band are ready to hit the road and take their musical celebration of Joni Mitchell to other Florida venues, for a very special concert experience. Now is the time to bring the magic of this music and this beloved iconic artist to your town.
